DELIVERY IN THE PIPELINE
October 15, 2020 | Construction & Civil Engineering
Anyone who regularly reads Construction & Civil Engineering will know how much I appreciate a bit of nifty engineering or innovation! That is why the won't be surprised to see the feature on page 12 - which highlights a new logistics solution, where underground freight systems provide a logistics backbone for future new smart cities. It sounds pretty revolutionary but with the arrival of Covid and the shock to the supply chain and delivery network that it brought, maybe it is time to think big and well out of the box?

A GREENER FUTURE FOR FOOD DELIVERY?
October 2, 2020 | The Grocer
Some might say Magway is rather ambitious and a little futuristic,” says co-founder and commercial director Phill Davies.
He’s not wrong. Magway’s aim is to establish a nation-spanning network of ‘delivery pipes’ running alongside motorways and under cities between distribution centres and urban hubs, through which it will fire thousands of tote-sized pods carrying groceries and packages.
Davies says Magway is undoubtedly a “bigger picture idea” but “this is exactly what is needed right now”. His aim is ambitious: to take thousands of pollution-emitting vans and lorries off the roads for good. “We don’t need empty promises, and ‘business as usual’ won’t cut it,” he adds.

Cargo version of Hyperloop
A somewhat scaled down version of Hyperloop, for cargo only, is being proposed by UK based Magway, which believes that in addition to providing an ultra-fast, and more environmentally friendly mode of transport for goods, will be simpler and easier to get up and running because passengers will not be involved.
Rather than operating in a vacuum like the Hyperloop system, Magway’s technology differs slightly by generating a magnetic wave of electrical current, using linear synchronous magnetic motors to propel multiple, standard-sized totes along a track.
WHO WILL BOLDLY WRITE THE FUTURE OF INFRASTRUCTURE? OUR SPUTNIK MOMENT
August 19, 2020 | Forbes
The world needs to take action to drive rapid global recovery, and we need to take stock of who will lead that recovery. Infrastructure investment is the right engine to drive recovery, to be sure, but given the disastrous economic state of emerging markets three questions are critical: what kind of infrastructure investment - roads and bridges, clean water and hospitals, AI and connected technologies? who makes those decisions? and how quickly will those investments yield growth? Post Covid-19 the world economy requires something as imaginative and bold as the Marshall Plan that catalyzed decades of European growth.
The UK’s Magway uses advanced magnet technology to build a transformational underground - zero carbon - e-commerce delivery system.
BIG IDEAS - NOT SMALL TAXES - WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE ONLINE DELIVERY
July 21, 2020 | The Grocer
This pandemic has forced us to pause and think about how we can all improve the way we live, work and also shop in a more responsible and sustainable manner. While taxation may create a short-term solution to help tackle current environmental issues, a more long-term and visionary approach that looks at the bigger picture and considers bolder ideas is required if the UK is to even come close to net-zero.
